about woman's animus...

Updated: Dec 4, 2020

The animus is the deposit, as it were, of all woman's ancestral experiences of man - and not only that, he is also a creative and procreative being, not in the sense of masculine creativity, but in the sense that he brings forth something we might call... the spermatic word.

-Carl Jung

*Animus is the hidden man in the woman / the male component in a woman's psyche.

Animus originated from Latin, where it was used to describe ideas such as the rational soul, life, mind, mental powers, courage or desire.

In the early nineteenth century, animus was used to mean, "temper" and was typically used in a hostile sense.

In 1923, it began being used as a term in Jungian psychology to describe the masculine side of women.

According to Jungian psychological theory, the conscious part of the psyche correlates with the outward gender; the unconscious part is considered to be an expression of the sex opposite the outward gender.

Animus, the hidden male aspect, is the archetype of reason and spirit of the female psyche.

Nested inside the shadow, the animus is mysterious, dark and threatening inner reality lurking in the woman’s unconscious. It is projected on the men in the woman's environ.

The woman’s father & a jury of other male collective directive draw up the animus.

Hence the animus is a manifestation of ‘their’ beliefs NOT who she genuinely is.

Usually, it persuades, coaxes and lures woman away from human relationships/‘real men’ commanding on ‘should be’ righteousness, self-criticism and judgments.

The complexities in animus integration are directly proportionate to the complications women have with their husbands/sons/male friend & family members.

In a nutshell, the unconscious is animating our environment!

The bottom line and answer to ALL are to understand our inner world & being aware of our projections with empathy & loving compassion.

*Animus – masculine archetype – seeks independence
